New Mexico Oct 2007 (Days 1 thru 3)

Day 1 - Friday (Oct 19th)

Didn't take too many pictures the first day, just spent some quality time with my family.

My brother Harry's cat, "Squeeks".

Day 2 - Saturday (Oct 20th)

Another nice day spent with family. The only pictures I took were of the beautiful Albuquerque sunset...

Day 3 - Sunday (Oct 21st)

Again, not many pictures. After brunch with family, I spent most of the day driving thru the Valles Caldera area on the way to Santa Fe. Valles Caldera is an ancient volcanic formation, with many interesting and beautiful sights. Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated as I drove up into the mountains. In fact, I drove thru moderate falling snow for part of the trip. This was the first time I had seen falling snow since I left NJ in 1986. In Santa Fe, I had a nice dinner with an old friend and her family. The evening ended with a 2hr drive to a hotel in Socorro, NM.

This is a formation called "Soda Dam", near the town of Jemez Springs. The dam is composed of "tufa" (fused volcanic ash) from one of the caldera eruptions.

Here is a topographical map of the area. The caldera is the large round-ish structure in the center. There are several secondary peaks within the caldera rim.

The green box shows the boundary of the Valles Caldera National Preserve
